Some games however, sadly don't play well with CrossOver and their branch of the WINE codebase. Other games may also need some extra attention before they can run on your Mac. For cases such as those, I'll also be using another popular distribution of WINE on Mac OS X: Wineskin. Wineskin is an application which is effectively a wrapper surrounding a direct native port of WINE to OS X, much like CrossOver, but where CrossOver excels in its ease of use and operation, Wineskin excels in allowing more direct fine-tuning of WINE for those looking to take a peek behind the curtain and tinker with the arcane clockwork running underneath the surface. If CrossOver was the OS X Finder, Wineskin would be the Terminal. Two other tools we're going to need are Mac apps which can run DOS-based and SCUMM-based games; thankfully, thanks to the combined efforts of open-source and enterprising Mac programmers, we have some of the best tools anyone could ask for: Alun Bestor's Boxer, a highly customized branch of DOSBox specifically tuned for OS X, and SCUMMVM, the excellent compatibility environment which has given new life to old point-and-click adventure games.
